A large number of books have been published about the various types of thermal analysis--thermogravimetry (TG), differential thermal analysis (DTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), etc. Yet, Hatakeyama and Quinn show that there is much more to learn about those methods. In addition to a general introduction to the basic thermal analysis techniques, the authors focus on examples and applications from the field of polymer science. The book provides a practical guide to these techniques and reveals many of the numerous "small" errors that can lead to totally different results in the analysis. In most cases it becomes clear which techniques should be avoided and which are the best for sample preparation. Still, in some examples the question remains for the reader: what is the best way to perform the analysis? Yet, even experienced practitioners will be surprised by the many new details and information that they can learn from this book. However, the choice of examples provided makes it especially valuable for everyone working with organic polymers.
