Debate over the function of the American high school did not begin yesterday. It began at the 1929 and 1930 Progressive Education Association annual conferences, with small discussion groups. Discontent with the control that colleges held over school curricula, coupled with the desire to improve the secondary school curriculum and teaching in general, prompted formation of the Commission on the Relation of School and College (also known as the Aikin Commission for its chair, headmaster Wilford M. Aikin). What followed was a 12-year (1930-42) "odyssey in school experimentation." Known primarily as the Eight-Year Study but also misleadingly referred to as the "Thirty School Study" (only 29 secondary schools participated throughout the project), the title refers to the eight years of schooling from high school through college. The format of this well-researched book alternates between chapters on the history of the Eight-Year Study and biographies of leading educators and theorists who spearheaded the project. Useful as a history of education supplementary text, or an informative guide for anyone interested in the challenges and possibilities of educational reform. Summing Up: Recommended.
