CHOICE Review

Quarteroni (Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne) and Saleri (Politecnico di Milan) offer a fine work that introduces MATLAB and provides a very useful collection of MATLAB's features for the solution of advanced mathematical and scientific applications. Chapter 1 begins with the basics and thus provides an introduction to MATLAB. Chapter 2 introduces the Newton and bisection methods for solving nonlinear equations illustrated with practical examples. Chapter 3 presents approximations for nonlinear functions, and chapter 4 discusses numerical differentiation and integration. Chapters 5 through 8 are devoted to advanced mathematical topics including factorization methods, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, advanced methods for solving differential equations, and numerical methods for boundary-value problems. The material is well presented and easily understood throughout and includes solutions for the end-of-chapter exercises. An excellent addition to academic libraries and university bookstores, this book will be useful for self study and as a complement to other MATLAB-based books. ^BSumming Up: Highly recommended.
