Jarvis (University of Surrey, UK) is on the editorial boards of Adult Education Quarterly and The International Journal of Lifelong Education. He has written numerous articles and several books. More than 5,000 entries form this dictionary and reflect his scholarship in the psychological, sociological, and historical aspects of adult learning theory. Included are programs, movements, terms, individuals, and organizations worldwide. International flavor ends there. Spelling is British and the intended readers are adult education professionals in the UK. Jarvis has included more organizations than the UNESCO Directory of Adult Education Documentation and Information Services (3rd ed., Paris, 1984) but access is limited by the alphabetical arrangement. Cross-references are inconsistent, and not all important acronyms receive entries. More terms are included than in UNESCO's trilingual Terminology of Adult Education (Paris, 1979), but Jarvis's work is padded with definitions not specific to adult/continuing education. In spite of these drawbacks to access, it is full of useful information. An optional choice for US academic libraries serving students and practitioners in adult education. -E. B.
