Giroux and Shannon have produced the first edited volume designed specifically to explore the intersection of cultural studies and education. The essays (most of them previously published) are organized around central issues in the critical theory of education--e.g., the role of teachers as public intellectuals, how inequality is fostered in the marketplace, the relationship between gender and identity, and race. The volume effectively highlights the effects of power and difference on humanizing and democratizing educational institutions, and will thus have value for professors of education and others seeking to direct attention to these issues. The editors' introduction and the last section of the book--dealing explicitly with the problems and potentials of bringing cultural studies and critical theory together to study education--will be especially valuable to graduate students and educational scholars exploring new avenues for critical inquiry. The other essays may be helpful to upper-division undergraduates and others interested in gender, race, and inequality in education. However, all readers must wade through heavy jargon and numerous theoretical allusions that will be unclear to those unfamiliar with recent critical literature on education. C. A.
