CHOICE Review

A careful development of geometry. Starting from affine geometry (including both the classical axioms and the algebraic approach through vector spaces), Roe adds distances to reach Euclidean geometry, then Cartesian coordinates, plane orientation (including polar coordinates), tangent lines, vector products to define spatial orientation, and axioms of area and volume. Along the way the reader encounters many properties of conic sections and quadric surfaces. Two final chapters introduce ideas from the differential geometry of curves and surfaces, including the general isoperimetric inequality and the Gauss-Bonnet theorem. Throughout, Roe mentions important connections with many other areas of mathematics, especially linear algebra and calculus, but also including topology and group theory. The traditional sequence of definition-theorem-proof is leavened by illuminating examples, historical asides, and applications to physics and engineering. Advanced undergraduate; graduate. C. J.
